Export of fuel briquettes from Czech Republic: opportunities and problems

The development of the domestic market of fuel briquettes directly depends on their cost. The price of fuel briquettes does not withstand competition with German fuel briquettes, fuelwood and coal. Thus, the Czech companies producing fuel briquettes account for up to 95% of the production to be exported to other European countries. It is important to note that a significant part of the Ukrainian briquette export to Europe goes through the Czech Republic. The United States Department of Agriculture has recently improved its forecasts concerning the harvest of sunflower in Ukraine in 2016, which means an increased production of sunflower oil by Ukrainian oil-extracting factories. The American analysts forecast the increase of sales volumes of both refined and crude sunflower oil. In the previous season a serious struggle for the market outlets was developing between the exporters from Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian exporters won the day mostly due to the anti-Russian sanctions from the EU. As for the experts, they forecast that it is the market of the countries of Asia: China, India, Turkey and several other Asian countries that is to become the main platform of a serious struggle between Russia and Ukraine for the extension of the market potential in this sector in 2016-2017 MY.

The first three months of 2016 saw a 28,8% increase of Ukrainian wood pellets export

These rates show that Ukrainian manufacturers make productive efforts to expand available distribution areas as well as to find new ones. Moreover, this means that the level of wood pellet consumption is constantly increasing in the world and in Europe in particularly. Poland (11,657 tonnes), Italy (4,422 tonnes), the Czech Republic (3,603 tonnes) and the Slovak Republic (1,732 tonnes) are among the biggest importers of Ukrainian wood pellets in 2016.

According to Ukrainian Biofuel Portal, in the first quarter of 2015 the domestic manufacturers exported 25 679.1 metric tones (ТM) of wood pellets. This number increased up to 33 079.6 ТM in the first quarter of the current year. One can see an increase of 7400.5 ТM during this period, which accounts for 28.8 % in percentage correlation. In the first quarter of 2015, 23 countries imported Ukrainian wood pellets.

In IQ 2016 the exporting countries themselves as well as their numbers have somehow changed. Ukrainian wood pellets have already been exported to 27 countries. The structure of export has also changed to some extent. So, in the first quarter of 2015 the main wood pellet consumers from abroad were Poland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Germany and Great Britain (in descending order).

Poland increased its imports of Ukrainian charcoal by 20% in 2013

According to the database of European charcoal importers and buyers 2012-2013 prepared by the experts of Ukrainian Biofuel Portal, in 2013 Poland increased its imports of Ukrainian charcoal by more than 6 000 tons (20%) in comparison with 2012.

Poland has one of the largest charcoal markets in the European Union. So, in 2013 its charcoal imports from Ukraine totaled more than 36 thousand tons that is 6 thousand tons more than in 2012.

According to the analysts of Ukrainian Biofuel Portal, the imports mainly increased due to the emergence of new large companies on the Poland charcoal market, such as Gryfskand Sp. z.o.o., Dancoal Sp. zoo, EKO-HIT sc, PHU Mirand-Plus, etc. In general, in 2013 in Ukraine there were about 50 Polish importing companies compared to 35 in 2012.

Brazil wood pellet plant based on eucalyptus biomass has been operating since March, 2014

In Brazil on March 26, 2014 one of the largest biomass producers in Brazil EBR (Energias Renováveis do Brasil) together with the large  U.S. chemical company Dow Chemical launched CHP on wood pellets. The capacity of the plant is 125.7 MW. The cost of the project amounted to $ 117,25 million (265 million reals).

The contract signed by both companies is to provide for the supply of steam and electricity for the next 18 years. According to the contract electricity will be supplied for Aratu petrochemicals complex in state of Bahia, which is one of the largest in Brazil. The owner of the complex is Dow Chemical Company.
